Cooking in a Time of Coronavirus

Aren’t we all tired of cooking the same meals? Isn’t it time to up the food game a bit?

Never fear! There are many ways to ensure that you have a varied menu using just a few ingredients, many of which are probably in your home right now. Numerous websites (Google “easy quarantine recipes”) and YouTube videos are  dedicated to cooking during coronavirus/work-from-home conditions and many podcasts also have relevant information. Some require exotic ingredients (asparagus, tofu, harissa) but most are pretty straightforward.

These recipes are much easier cooking than the “shelter in place” banana bread baking trend (but if you have perfected your banana bread, feel free to share the perfect recipe or, better yet, the results!).  Here are a few easy meal websites:

If you would rather treat yourself and order a meal for pick-up/delivery (please think carefully before dining out!!!), consider visiting one of the many Black-owned food businesses in Austin. From fine dining to food truck, full course meals to snacks on the go, whatever you are looking for food-wise is available here! See extensive lists at and Eater Austin and support our neighbors while enjoying a good meal.

There are also Austin restaurants with Black chefs (article covers the 2019 Taste of Black Austin event; 2020’s event was cancelled), offering a range of foods and techniques with something bound to please everyone. Be sure to call ahead—the restaurant situation is changing rapidly right now.

And after a great meal, you want dessert, right? Or maybe you subscribe to the philosophy that “life is short, eat dessert first.” In either event, dessert doesn’t have to be a challenge. Here are some really easy dessert suggestions that, again, might even be make-able with what you already have in your cabinets.
