Carrel assignments
The Library makes a number of carrels available for use by third year, LLM, and exchange students. The carrels are located on all floors of the Library and will be assigned on a first-come, first-served basis. Students interested in being assigned a carrel should come to the circulation desk.
Students who are assigned a carrel will sign a carrel assignment
acknowledgement form; that form states that any student to whom a carrel is assigned understands and agrees to the following policies.
- An assigned carrel allows a student to store books and other materials in the carrels and to have access to the assigned carrel by key. An assigned carrel allows the student access only to the carrel's locked bookcase; it is not an assignment of the carrel study space. Students to whom carrels are assigned should not in any event ask individuals sitting in the carrel space to move. Students to whom carrels are assigned should not store books or other materials on carrel study surfaces (i.e., desktops or tops of carrels).
- Students will be assigned carrels by Library staff based on availability. A student may request that his/her carrel is located on a particular floor of the Library, but the Library cannot guarantee that a carrel on a requested floor will be available. Some carrels on the 4th floor are located in the Library's laptop-free zone. Students will be so notified before a carrel in a laptop-free zone is assigned.
- The carrel assignment period begins upon completion of the acknowledgement form and ends on the day one week after the last day of the July Texas bar exam (see paragraph 6 below). Students may terminate a carrel assignment at any time by returning the carrel key to the circulation desk. Keys must be returned to the circulation desk at the end of the assignment period.
- Students who do not return keys at or before the end of the assignment period will be assessed a $75 fee. Students will also be assessed a $75 fee to replace a lost key. A $25 fee will be charged to clean the carrel or remove material.
- Students may not store in carrels Library books or other materials that are not checked out. No food or beverages may be stored in the carrel. Library staff will periodically check carrel space to ensure that they do not contain Library materials that have not been checked out. Any such Library materials, food, or drinks found in carrels will be removed. A note will be left by Library staff each time a carrel is checked.
- Carrel assignment privileges will be revoked if food, drinks, or unchecked out Library materials are found in a student's carrel on two occasions. In that event, the carrel assignment is immediately terminated and the carrel key must be returned to the circulation desk.
- All materials remaining in carrels after termination of the assignment period will be removed and disposed of by Library staff.
