Information for Visitors

Using the collections

One way Rare Books & Special Collections preserves its materials is through special rules and procedures. Materials must be used in the Reading Room under staff supervision. Access to the stacks is limited. Users sign the daily register and agree to comply with the Rules For Use of Materials in the Tarlton Law Library Rare Books and Special Collections. Pencils are provided for note taking. All personal effects must be placed in a locked cabinet. Persons using the archive and manuscript collections will fill out the Application to Use Manuscript Collections.

While an appointment is not required, it can save you time and effort. If you are coming from outside Austin, we especially urge you to contact us in advance, so that we can help you make the most of your research visit.
