Whitehead, Benjamin, b. 1856.
Whitehead's Church Law : English Law, Roman/Canon Law
Whitehead's comprehensive dictionary, he told readers in his preface, deals with the laws of England relating to all aspects of the Church, including tithes and offerings, Church property, archbishops and dignitaries, the rights and duties of the clergy, all vestments, ritual, doctrines, and sacraments, feasts and fasts, blasphemy and sacrilege, Jews and dissenters, and much more. He included, wherever possible, Church history and statistics, as well as the doctrines of the Greek and Roman Churches and various sects of the Protestant Church. The definitions are generally simple and intended to be easily understood by a layman as well as a lawyer (e.g., "CHAPLAIN is he that performs divine service in a chapel"), but where Whitehead stated the law he included detailed and accurate references to cases and statutes, for those who require more information.
