The Modus Legendi Abbreviaturas is not, strictly speaking, a dictionary, but rather a glossary of abbreviations commonly found in Roman and canon law texts. It was first published around 1475 in Strassburg, and often included in larger works. It was published as an anonymous work, but research later discovered that the author, Wernherus of Schussenried, embedded his name in an acrostic beginning at various places, depending on the edition and printing.

See Victor Scholderer, "The Author of the 'Modus legendi abbreviaturas'", the Library (London), 3rd ser., v. 2 (1911), p. 181-182.
