Francisco J. Santamaría was a man of many talents: poet, teacher, journalist, historian, lawyer, judge, and politician. A native of the state of Tabasco, Mexico, he served many years as a lawyer and judge in Mexico City. As a judge, he earned the nickname of "the Lynx" (juez lince) for his sharp-sighted intellect. He returned to his native Tabasco as governor in 1947-1953.
However, Santamaría's primary claim to fame is as a lexicographer of Spanish as spoken in Latin America and Mexico. His two great works are the Diccionario general de americanismos (1942) and the Diccionario de mejicanismos (1959), both of which remain in print as fundamental reference works in their fields.
The Diccionario del Código Civil is a pocket-sized book that serves as both a glossary and index for the civil code of the Federal District of Mexico. This code is the basic civil code for all of Mexico. It was the first volume in a series that Santamaría edited, the "Biblioteca de Bolsillo de la Legislación Nacional" ("Pocket Library of National Legislation").
A more detailed biographical essay on Santamaría is available online, courtesy of the Academia Mexicana de la Lengua.
Editions: Mexico City, 1935.
