Renton, Alexander Wood, b. 1861.
Renton's People's Dictionary of English Law : English Law
Sir Alexander Wood Renton was a prominent author and editor. His most significant work was as editor of the massive reprint of The English Reports (178 volumes), which gathered close to six centuries of English case law that had previously been scattered in the nominative reporters. He also edited an Encyclopedia of the Laws of England (15 vols.) and treatises on colonial laws, patents, and lunacy laws.
In the preface to The People's Dictionary of English Law, Renton wrote, "The object of this book is to sketch clearly, with copious illustrations from decided cases, the leading branches and doctrines of English law. It is hoped that the book may prove of interest not only to general readers, but to members of the legal profession, both in the United Kingdom and abroad."
