A pocket dictionary of the law of bills of exchange,
promissory notes, bank notes, checks, &c

John Irving Maxwell was a barrister of the Inner Temple who also authored a treatise on maritime law and an interesting essay titled Hints for Protecting the Public Against the Extortion and Insolence of Hackney-Coachmen. In the preface to his Pocket Dictionary, Maxwell states that "it is intended as a complete compendium to the Merchant and Man of Business, whether in his compting-house or travelling to any distant part of the country; and by presenting a digest of adjudged cases relative to the predicament in which he may be placed, may enable him to act with promptitude where legal advice canot be procured, and where delay might be productive of mischief." The definitions are clear and succinct, and thoroughly cross-referenced.
