Kinney's Law Dictionary and Glossary : American Law

A Law Dictionary and Gloassary, J. Kendrick Kinney, 1893
A Law Dictionary and Gloassary, 1893

In the preface to his Law Dictionary and Glossary, Kinney writes, "The purpose of this book is to give with brevity, but with precision and reasonable fullness, the meaning of the words and phrases in the books of the law; to give the meaning not only of the modern words, but of the words, in whatever tongue, and whether now a part of living legal language or not, which have had legal use and function, and which thus mark the lines upon which the law has grown, and the salient points in its history."

Reviews were positive. "As a dictionary of legal words and terms it is as good as any we have seen," wrote The Green Bag, and the Yale Law Journal said "the chief advantage of this dictionary is the large number of terms defined." However, only one edition of Kinney's Law Dictionary and Glossary ever appeared. It apparently could not compete with Black's Law Dictionary for the profession's favor.
