Cornejo's Diccionario histórico y forense del derecho real de España : Spanish Law
|
| Diccionario, 1779 |
The success and influence of Diderot's Encyclopedie, which aimed to describe culture in all its manifestations, gave rise in the 18th century to encyclopedic dictionaries that would contain all the knowledge in a given field of study. Andrés Cornejo's Diccionario histórico y forense del derecho real de España set out to do this for Spanish law. In his prologue Cornejo states that he began his dictionary as a tool for his research into the history of Spanish law. It includes terms that could be easily misunderstood and the names of legal institutions and offices. The entries vary in length. In addition to defining the terms, the entries give historical background and cite the applicable laws, pointing out and explaining contradictions.
Cornejo's Diccionario appeared as a one-volume work in 1779. He published the second volume in 1784 as an appendix, containing additional terms omitted from the first volume. The work is dedicated to the Virgin Mary.
Editions: Madrid, 1779; appendix 1784.
