Depiction of an Aztec war: provocation by the rebels and their subjugation The story of an Aztec war (right)(Codex Mendoza). On the second row at left is the incident that provoked it: soldiers of a rebellious chief kill two Aztec merchants. Below, Aztec ambassadors are chased away by the rebels after delivering the customary ultimatum prior to hostilities. The top row shows the aftermath of the Aztec victory: the rebel chief is executed while his family members, wearing slave collars, are taken away.
