Bobbitt spoke to an audience of several hundred at “An Evening with Philip Bobbitt,” at the LBJ Library on Jan. 21, 2003. Sarah Buel delivered the keynote address to the California Attorney General’s Conference in Sacramento, Jan. 6, 2003, entitled “Trends and Challenges in Domestic Violence Law.” On Jan. 7, 2003, Buel gave the keynote address, “Optimizing Accountability for Offenders and Safety for Victims: Promising Court Practices With Family Violence Cases,” for the California Chief Probation Officers Conference in Concord, Calif. Buel was the sole presenter to the faculty of the Harvard Medical School at its Symposium on Domestic Violence, Jan. 22, 2003, speaking on “The Pedagogy of Ethical, Effective Treatment of Batterer and Victim Patients: Examining the Intersections of Law and Medicine,” and then gave a talk to all first-year students at Harvard Medical School on “Ethical Interventions and Liability Implications for Physicians Handling Domestic Violence Cases.” Michael Gagarin delivered the Presidential Address to the annual meeting of the American Philological Society, Jan, 5, 2003, in New Orleans. Henry Hu appeared on CNBC’s flagship show “Business Center” on Nov. 1, 2002, during which he was interviewed by anchor Ron Insana as to whether Harvey Pitt should resign as chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission and as to various aspects of Chairman Pitt’s performance. Hu also appeared on CNBC’s show “Wake Up Call” on Nov. 1, 2002, during which he and Wall Street Journal Washington bureau chief Gerald Seib were interviewed about Chairman Pitt. Hu was quoted in Business Week Online, Nov. 1, 2002, on the indictment of former Enron Chief Financial Officer Andrew Fastow and complications associated with the off-balance sheet partnerships and special purpose entities. Hu was quoted by the Dow Jones News Service, Oct. 30, 2002, on the restructuring of Citigroup and its Salomon Smith Barney unit in the wake of concerns over the independence of stock analyst research. Hu was quoted in the Washington Post, Oct. 25, 2002, on disclosure issues relating to AOL Time Warner, Bristol-Myers Squibb, and Tyco International and the current corporate governance climate. Hu was quoted by the Associated Press, Oct. 23, 2002, on litigation brought by former shareholders involving Enron and other defendants. Hu was quoted in the Los Angeles Times, Oct. 22, 2002, on actions taken by Massachusetts regulators against Credit Suisse First Boston for the alleged hyping of stocks of companies for which the firm did investment banking work. Susan Klein presented “The New Federal Rules” to the Federal Public Defenders Office of the Western District of Texas (with Lucian Campbell, Federal Public Defender of the Western District and member of the Advisory Committee on the Federal Rules of Criminal Procedure), on Jan. 24, 2003, in the Federal Courthouse in Austin. Roy Mersky was appointed to the Executive Committee of the Texas Supreme Court Historical Society. Neil Netanel gave the keynote address at the Conference on Governance and Governments in Cyberspace, Jan. 24, 2003, at the University of Toronto Faculty of Law. Netanel’s paper, “Impose a Noncommercial Use Levy to Allow Free P2P File-Swapping and Remixing,” was recently listed on SSRN’s Top Ten download list for “Law School Research Papers:Public Law & Legal Theory Recent Hits.” Steven Ratner was on a panel entitled “Does the UN Security Council Create Law?” at the International Peace Academy’s conference on “The UN Security Council in the Post-Cold War Era,” Jan. 24, 2003, in New York City. Louise Weinberg has been invited to give a talk to UT graduate students in the political sciences in early February 2003 on President Bush’s judicial appointments. She will join a panel discussing current political affairs. The second edition of Weinberg’s co-authored conflicts casebook, published in Fall 2002, has gone into its second printing.
