FACULTY ACTIVITIES

Lynn Baker became a six-time National Champion in tournament bridge when she and her partner bested more than 120 other pairs to win the two-day Life Master Women’s Pairs event on Nov. 22, 2003, in New Orleans.

Sarah Buel gave the keynote address to the Fort Bend County District Attorney’s Domestic Violence Conference in Richardson, Tex., Oct. 30, 2003, on "Improving the Criminal Justice Response to Family Violence: Promising Practices to Replicate." On Nov. 10, 2003, in Gulf Hills, Miss., Buel gave the keynote address to the Mississippi Attorney General’s Domestic Violence Conference on "Evidence-Based Prosecution of Family Violence Cases: A Blueprint for Victim Safety."

Patricia Hansen was an invited speaker at a conference on "Justicia a la Luz Pública: Transparencia en la Impartición de Justicia" ("Justice in the Public Light: Transparency in the Distribution of Justice"), held at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) in Mexico City, Nov. 10-11, 2003, and co-sponsored by the UNAM law faculty and the Mexican newspaper REFORMA. The conference brought together jurists and scholars from the U.S., Mexico, Chile, and Argentina to discuss judicial transparency and its role in promoting the rule of law, democratic government and economic development. Hansen was quoted in an article about the conference in REFORMA, Nov. 11, 2003.

Henry Hu was quoted in a front-page story in the WASHINGTON POST, Sept. 22, 2003, on the merits of appointing former Citigroup co-chief executive John Reed as the interim chairman and chief executive of the New York Stock Exchange. Hu was also quoted on a variety of corporate governance and compensation issues arising from matters relating to former New York Stock Exchange chairman Richard Grasso in the ASIAN WALL STREET JOURNAL, Sept. 15, 2003, BLOOMBERG NEWS, Sept. 16, 2003, CRAIN’S NEW YORK BUSINESS, Sept. 22, 2003, GLOBE & MAIL (Toronto), Sept. 19, 2003, MANAGER MAGAZIN ONLINE, Sept. 15, 2003, NEWSDAY (New York), Sept. 17, 2003, SÜDDEUTSCHE ZEITUNG (Munich), Sept. 15, 2003, WALL STREET JOURNAL, Sept. 12, 2003, and WASHINGTON POST, Sept. 12, 2003. Hu was quoted on a derivatives arbitrage matter by the Associated Press, Sept. 20, 2003, and DALLAS MORNING NEWS, Sept. 7, 2003. Hu noted the optimism (and forgetfulness) of many equity investors today in a story on Silicon Valley and Wall Street in the NIHON KEIZAI SHIMBUN (Tokyo), Sept. 12, 2003. Hu was quoted on the behavior of ordinary stock investors in the face of heavy insider selling in the DALLAS MORNING NEWS, Sept. 8, 2003. Hu was quoted in BUSINESS WEEK, Sept. 8, 2003, on a matter relating to the acquisition of Clayton Homes by Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway.

Ronald Mann spoke at the ALI-ABA Conference on "The New and Emerging UCC" in New York City, Nov. 6-8, 2003, on panels about developments regarding amendments to UCC Articles 3 and 4, recent cases under UCC Articles 3, 4, and 4A, and the new Check Clearing for the 21st Century Act. Mann delivered the Akard Distinguished Lecture at the Law School, Nov. 19, 2003, entitled "Policy Implications of the Global Growth of Card-Based Payment Systems." At the Law School’s 22nd Annual Bankruptcy Conference, Nov. 21, 2003, in Austin, Mann presented "Problems with Proceeds Under the New Article 9" and (with Sam Dinkin) "Alternative Auction Techniques in Bankruptcy."

Jane Stapleton has accepted an invitation by the University of Oxford to serve as an External Member of that University’s Review Committee of its Faculty of Law. On Nov. 20, 2003, Stapleton was an invited speaker at the Symposium on "The Future of Torts" at Pace University, delivering a paper entitled "Judicial Law-Making, Bright-Lines and Restatement." Stapleton’s paper delivered to the High Court Centenary Conference in early October has been described, in a number of public fora, by Justice Michael Kirby of the High Court as taking "the Oscar for the most brilliant original idea ... [containing] an exceptionally insightful comment on the separation of powers."
