Fielder Oil & Gas Tax Conference, held in Houston on Oct. 23-24, 2003, and co-sponsored by the Law School and the IRS Office of Chief Counsel. Carl Baudenbacher spoke at a colloquium at the French Cour de Cassation on “Genesis and Problems of EC Regulation” on Oct. 2, 2003. Sarah Buel delivered two plenary addresses in Reno, Nev., on Oct. 21, 2003: to the National Council of Juvenile & Family Court Judges (“Juvenile & Dependency Court’s Response to Family Violence: Integrating Promising Practices”), and to the National Judicial College (“Improving Judicial Response to Domestic Violence Law”). Buel gave the keynote address, “Domestic Violence in Rural Communities: Trends, Challenges & Promising Practices,” at Texas A&M University’s Rural Domestic Violence Conference, Oct. 24, 2003. Buel delivered the Winston Howard Distinguished Lecture at the University of Wyoming College of Law on Oct. 28, 2003, entitled “Rethinking Rhetoric, Doctrine & Practice in Domestic Violence Law.” John Dzienkowski gave a presentation on “Law School Inquiries into Applicant Character and Fitness” at the 10th Annual Legal Ethics Symposium at South Texas College of Law, Oct. 10, 2003. The paper was based upon a study of the character and fitness inquiries at the top 20 U.S. law schools as well as all Texas law schools. Lee Fennell presented a paper entitled “Residential Pools” at the 2003 Annual Meeting of the Midwest Law & Economics Association, held at the University of Indiana-Indianapolis School of Law, Oct. 10-11, 2003. Fennell delivered her paper, “Common Interest Tragedies,” at a faculty colloquium at Lewis & Clark Law School, Oct. 28, 2003. Henry Hu was quoted on Arnold Schwarzenegger naming Warren Buffett as an economic adviser by Agence France Presse, Aug. 14, 2003. Hu was quoted in the Washington Post, Aug. 14, 2003, on mandatory arbitrations involving investors who blame misleading stock analyst reports for their losses. Hu was quoted in the Los Angeles Times, Aug. 14, 2003, on recoveries in securities fraud class actions in a story on a lawsuit involving Homestore Inc., the Internet real estate firm. Hu was quoted on Morgan Stanley hiring a deputy to New York Attorney General Eliot Spitzer by the Dow Jones News Service, Aug. 14, 2003. Hu was quoted on certain empirical studies of law from Harvard economist Andrei Shleifer and his colleagues by the Dow Jones News Service, Aug. 11, 2003. Hu was quoted on the structuring of executive compensation by Efe (Spanish Newswire Services), Aug. 6, 2003. Hu was quoted on the impact on lawsuits related to Enron of a report by examiner Neal Batson and certain settlements entered into by J. P. Morgan Chase and Citigroup in the Globe & Mail (Toronto), July 30, 2003. Stanley Johanson spoke on “Recent Developments Affecting Estate Planning” at the Southern Federal Tax Institute in Atlanta, Sept. 19, 2003. Johanson also spoke on “Recent Developments in Estate Planning” on Sept. 26, 2003, at the Houston Estate & Financial Forum, and on Oct. 17, 2003, at the Southern Nevada Estate Planning Council in Las Vegas. Steven Ratner gave a talk entitled “Is International Law Impartial?” to the University of Georgia School of Law Faculty Colloquium, Oct. 9, 2003. Lawrence Sager spoke on “The Myth of Separation (and Much Better Ways to Think About Religious Liberty)’ to the UT Law chapter of the American Constitution Society, Oct. 14, 2003. Jordan Steiker spoke on “The Future of the American Death Penalty” to the UT Law Chapter of the American Constitution Society, Oct. 22, 2003. Ernest Young was one of the speakers for “Packing the Courts? A Discussion of President Bush’s Nominations to the Federal Judiciary,” a debate sponsored by the Law School chapter of the American Constitution Society, Oct. 29, 2003. Michael Widener was one of the speakers at a roundtable sponsored by the Ninth Judicial Circuit Historical Society, entitled “Boundless Opportunities: Researching Western Legal History,” at the annual meeting of the Western History Association, Oct. 10, 2003, in Fort Worth.
