McKay Law Professor Award from the Tort and Insurance Practice Section of the American Bar Association on Aug. 17, 2003, at the ABA’s annual meeting in San Francisco, for his outstanding contributions to the field of tort and insurance law. Powers will help present an overview of HB4, the recently enacted Texas tort reform legislation, for a UT CLE symposium entitled “Law Practice After HB4: What Every Practitioner Needs to Know,” Aug. 22, 2003, in Austin; Sept. 3, 2003, in Dallas; Sept. 25, 2003, in Houston; Oct. 10, 2003, in McAllen; and Oct. 17, 2003, in San Antonio. Charles Childress delivered a “Legislative Update” on Family Code changes affecting Child Protective Services cases at the annual Prosecutor’s Conference, sponsored by the Children’s Justice Act Project, July 22, 2003, in San Antonio. Lee Fennell presented a paper entitled “The Commons and the Cathedral” at a regional conference of the International Association for the Study of Common Property, held in Anchorage, Alaska, Aug. 18-19, 2003. Henry Hu was a participant at the 2003 Money Summit, June 16-17, 2003, a gathering of about 125 individuals, including, among others, two members of President Bush’s Cabinet, CEO’s of financial institutions, and money managers controlling roughly 10 trillion dollars of assets. Hu was quoted in a front page story in the Washington Post, June 7, 2003, on his concerns over the current state of investor beliefs with respect to the stock market. The comments Hu made to the Washington Post attracted attention (e.g., General-Anzeiger (Bonn), June 10, 2003, and Spiegel Online, June 16, 2003) and were included in the “quotes of the week” column of the Austin American Statesman, June 15, 2003. Brian Leiter was quoted, and his law school rankings discussed, in an article on law school rankings in the Los Angeles Daily Journal, Aug. 25, 2003. Ronald Mann will talk on “IP Law Meets Real Estate Transactions” at the Law School’s 37th Annual Mortgage Lending Institute, Sept. 12, 2003, in Austin, and Sept. 19, 2003, in Houston. Christy Nisbett was elected to a three-year term on the Board of Directors of Scribes, the American Society of Writers on Legal Subjects, during the American Bar Association’s annual meeting, Aug. 7-12, 2003, in San Francisco. Steven Ratner was interviewed on BBC Radio 5’s “Up All Night” on Aug. 12, 2003, on the legal ramifications of exile abroad by governmental leaders. Wayne Schiess has authored three legal-writing lessons for the Center for Computer Assisted Legal Instruction (CALI): “Stating Facts: Objective and Persuasive Approaches”; “Punctuation and Grammar Basics for Law Students”; and “Issue Statements for Memos and Briefs.” All three lessons will be available on the CALI website <www.cali.org> in September 2003. Jordan Steiker has been invited to speak at the Cheltenham 5-Star Forum on Oct. 14, 2003. The forum's other speakers will include his sister, Carol Steiker, Erin Brockovich, Randy Cohen, Calvin Trillin, and Robert Fulghum.
