FACULTY ACTIVITIES

Dean William Powers was the keynote speaker at the May 1, 2003, meeting of the Travis County Bar Association, and spoke on the Enron case.

At the conference, “From Human Rights to Cultural Empowerment: The Awas Tingni Ruling and the Struggle for Indigenous & Black Land Rights in the Americas,” held Apr. 18-20, 2003, at the Law School, Sarah Cleveland, Steven Ratner, and Gerald Torres served as session chairs, and Torres also delivered introductory remarks.

Carl Baudenbacher chaired the Tenth St. Gallen International Competition Law Forum on  Apr. 24-25, 2003, with 180 participants from 16 countries and a keynote speech from EC Competition Commissioner Mario Monti. On May 15-16, 2003, Baudenbacher co-chaired the Fourth Vienna Globalization Symposium together with the Special Coordinator for the Stability Pact for Southeastern Europe, Erhard Busek.

Karen Engle was the discussant for a session on “Autonomy, Law, and the State” at the conference, “Mapping Autonomies in Chiapas: An International Research Networks Workshop,” Apr. 25, 2003, sponsored by UT’s Teresa Lozano Long Institute of Latin American Studies.

William Forbath will deliver a paper entitled “Labor, History, and Rights” during a session on “Labor Past as Labor Prologue” at the annual meeting of the Law & Society Association, June 6, 2003, in Pittsburgh.

Barbara Hines spoke at the Law School’s CLE program, “Immigration Law Fundamentals: A Practical Guide to Removal Procedures and Strategies,” Apr. 24, 2003, in El Paso on the topics “Contesting Deportation,” “Relief from Removal,” and “Documentation for Waiver Applications.” Hines spoke at the Law School’s “Immigration Issues for Criminal Lawyers and General Practitioners,” Apr. 25, 2003, in El Paso, on “Definitions and Analysis and Consequences of Crimes” and on a panel entitled “Strategies for Dealing with Common Crimes.”

Brian Leiter has accepted appointment to the editorial board of the new Journal of Moral Philosophy: An International Journal of Moral, Political, and Legal Philosophy, which will begin publication in April 2004, and is based in the Philosophy Department at the University of Sheffield in the U.K.

Ronald Mann was quoted in the New York Times, May 2, 2003, and on ePaynews.com, on the significance of the settlement by Visa and MasterCard of the class action regarding their “must-carry” debit-cards policy.

Basil MarkesinisThe German Law of Torts: A Comparative Treatise (4th ed. 2002; with Hannes Unberath) was reviewed at 31 International Journal of Legal Information 116 (2003).

Roy Mersky has been elected to a one-year term on the Board of Directors of the Nonresident Lawyers Division of the State Bar of Wisconsin.

Neil Netanel was quoted in an article in Wired News, <http://www.wired.com>, May 1, 2003, discussing Apple Computer’s new online music distribution service.

Steven Ratner served as moderator for “Henry V and the Ways of War: Legal and Ethical Issues,” an event sponsored by the Law School which included a talk by Ratner on “Henry V and the Law of War,” presentations by UT professors Paul Woodruff (Philosophy) and James Loehlin (English) and a performance of scenes from Shakespeare’s Henry V by the Austin Shakespeare Festival company, Apr. 29, 2003, in the Law School’s Eidman Courtroom. Ratner presented a paper entitled “Precommitment Theory as a Framework for Self-Restraint by States: Explanation and Examples” to the University of California Boalt Hall School of Law Workshop on International Law, Apr. 17, 2003, and to the Vanderbilt University Law School Legal Theory Workshop, Apr. 25, 2003. Ratner was quoted in the Christian Science Monitor, May 2, 2003, on the legal implications of President Bush’s declaration of the end of the war in Iraq.

Gerald TorresThe Miner’s Canary: Enlisting Race, Resisting Power, Transforming Democracy (2002; with Lani Guinier) was reviewed at 88 Cornell Law Review 855 (2003).

Jeanne Price has been named editor of the new Journal of Electronic Resources in Law Libraries, with the inaugural issue scheduled for publication in Spring 2004.
