Lynn Baker’s team finished second in the Women’s Board-a-Match competition held at the North American Bridge Championships in Phoenix, Ariz., Dec. 1-2, 2002.

Philip Bobbitt’s The Shield of Achilles: War, Peace, and the Course of History (2002) provided the point of departure for the first major address by the new Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr. Rowan Williams, on the future of the Church of England, as reported in the Dec. 19, 2002, issue of The Times (London).

Sarah Buel delivered the keynote address, “Sovereignty, Safety and Domestic Violence Policy: Promising Practices for Tribal Interventions,” at the Oklahoma Native American Domestic Violence Conference, Dec. 9, 2002, in Norman, Okla.

Barbara Hines was interviewed by KERA-FM in Fort Worth, Dec. 6, 2002, regarding prosecution of Filipino airport workers in light of immigration developments that are part of the U.S. war on terrorism. Hines was quoted in the Detroit Free Press, Dec. 9, 2002, on the lack of constitutional checks on searches at Border Patrol highway checkpoints.

Henry Hu was quoted in Business Week, Oct. 14, 2002, on the impact of New York Attorney General Eliot Spitzer on the “spinning” of shares allegedly engaged in by investment banks and corporate officers. Hu was quoted in the Dallas Morning News, Oct. 14, 2002, on the assumptions Warren Buffett uses about long term returns from investment of pension plan assets and on Hu’s own thoughts on pension plan stock and bond returns. Hu was quoted in the Daily Princetonian, Oct. 10, 2002, in a story on certain allocations of shares in initial public offering to eBay Chief Executive Officer Meg Whitman. Hu was quoted by the Dow Jones News Service, Oct. 9, 2002, in a story relating to a bonus paid to Tyco International’s former CEO Dennis Kozlowski and the potential liability of PricewaterhouseCoopers. Hu was quoted in the Sunday Telegraph (London), Oct. 6, 2002, on fiduciary law issues involving brokerages and CEO’s of clients. Hu was quoted in the Des Moines Register, Oct. 5, 2002, in a story relating to a shareholder lawsuit against the former McLeodUSA CEO Clark McLeod. Hu was quoted by the Dow Jones News Service, Oct. 4, 2002, on proposals to enhance the independence of stock analysts put forth by the National Association of Securities Dealers and the New York Stock Exchange.

Brian Leiter was quoted in an article in the “Week in Review” section of the New York Times, Dec. 15, 2002, on some of the philosophical and evidential conundrums connected to the Bush Administration’s demand that Iraq “prove a negative,” namely, that it has no weapons of mass destruction.

Steven Ratner delivered a paper on “Jus ad Bellum and Jus in Bello After September 11” on Dec. 17, 2002, at the University of Haifa Faculty of Law conference on “Democracy versus Terror: Where are the Limits?”, in Haifa, Israel. On Dec. 18, 2002, at the Tel Aviv University Faculty of Law international conference on “Liberty, Equality, Security,” Ratner gave a paper entitled “Overcoming Temptations to Violate Human Dignity in Times of Crisis: On the Possibilities for Meaningful Self-Restraint.”

Alan Rau was appointed as a member of the panel of mediators of the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Lausanne, Switzerland.

John Robertson was quoted in the Wall Street Journal, Jan. 2, 2003, saying that “I think an argument can be made for limited cloning,” as long as the technique is proven safe.

Wayne Schiess gave a presentation on “Clear Legal Drafting” for the State Bar of Texas’ Advanced Family Law Drafting Course, Dec. 11-12, 2002, in New Orleans.

Pamela Sigman passed the Juvenile Law Specialization Exam on Oct. 7, 2002, and is now Board Certified in Juvenile Law.

Michael Sturley attended a meeting of the Secretary of State’s Advisory Committee on Private International Law, Dec. 13, 2002, in Washington, DC, to discuss the U.S. government’s negotiating strategy at the Eleventh Session of Working Group III (Transport Law) of the U.N. Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL), which will be held in New York in March and April 2003.

Gerald Torres was the subject of a feature article in the Austin American-Statesman, Dec. 30, 2002.
