FACULTY ACTIVITIES

At the Texas International Law Journal’s Symposium on International Litigation, in honor of Russell Weintraub, Feb. 21, 2002, at the Law School, Sarah Cleveland discussed “Transient Jurisdiction, Sovereign Immunity, and the Alien Tort Claims Act” during a session on “Suits in U.S. Courts Against Foreign and U.S. Entities Under the Alien Tort Claims Act”; Jay Westbrook spoke on “Public Enforcement of Private Rights” as part of a panel on “Extraterritorial Application of U.S. Antitrust Law”; and Hans Baade moderated a panel on “Obtaining Evidence from Abroad.” In addition, Dean William Powers delivered welcoming remarks and Douglas Laycock gave the closing remarks.

Philip Bobbitt delivered the prestigious Montgomery Fellows address at Dartmouth College on Feb. 26, 2002, on the topic of “Intelligence Failures” as part of a lecture series on American intelligence. Previous Montgomery Fellows include Michel Foucault, William Styron, John Updike, and Lech Walesa.

Sarah Buel presented the keynote address, “Bridging the Gap Between Theory and Practice: The Pedagogy of Domestic Violence Law,” at the ABA Regional Law School Conference at the University of North Carolina School of Law, Feb. 21, 2002.

Patricia Hansen participated in a Breakfast Workshop that included a delegation from the World Bank and a group of University of Texas faculty, concerning research priorities in Latin America, in Austin on Feb. 16, 2002.

Kimberlee Kovach conducted a program for the Delaware judiciary on mediation, in Wilmington, Feb. 4, 2002. Kovach spoke on “Issues of Training Mediators in Today’s World” at the Annual Alabama Conference on Dispute Resolution in Montgomery, Feb. 13, 2002. On Feb. 19, 2002, Kovach gave a talk on “Issues Surrounding Enactment of Codes of Ethics for Mediators” at the Cámara de Comercio in Córdoba, Argentina, and made a similar presentation on Feb. 20, 2002, before the Asociación Empresarial Region Centro Argentina, in Villa María, Argentina. Kovach participated in a panel discussion regarding public perception and consumer opinions about mediation at the Annual Conference of the Texas Association of Mediators, Mar. 1, 2002, in Austin. Kovach has been appointed to the ABA Standing Committee on Lawyer Discipline, and is a member of the Curriculum Committee of the ABA Section of Legal Education and Admissions to the Bar.

Henry Hu was quoted on Global Crossing corporate governance matters in the Wall Street Journal, Feb. 5, 2002. Hu was quoted in the Los Angeles Times, Feb. 5, 2002, on considerations that may affect the chances of federal criminal charges being brought in connection with Enron. Hu appeared on a show produced by National Public Radio's Boston affiliate on the impact of Enron on public confidence in the American economic system, on Feb. 4, 2002. Hu was quoted the resignation of Kenneth Lay from Enron’s board of directors in Associated Press stories on Feb. 4, 2002, and Feb. 5, 2002. Hu discussed skepticism in the stock market about non-transparent accounting by corporations in the Washington Post, Jan. 30, 2002. Hu was quoted in the Wall Street Journal, Jan. 29, 2002, and the Wall Street Journal Europe, Jan. 30, 2002, on business implications of the purchase by UBS (Switzerland's largest bank) of certain Enron trading operations. Hu discussed “lead plaintiff” securities law issues in the Jan. 30, 2002, San Antonio Express-News. Hu was quoted on possible rationales for J.C. Penney’s new holding company structure in the Jan. 29, 2002, Dallas Morning News. Hu was quoted in USA Today, Jan. 29, 2002, on possible criminal sanctions in the Enron context. Hu was quoted in the Jan. 27, 2002, San Diego Union & Tribune on Enron securities disclosure matters. Hu was quoted in a Jan. 25, 2002, Reuters story on a possible federal grand jury investigation of a well-known California law firm. Hu was quoted in the Jan. 25, 2002, Dallas Morning News on the effects of Enron on boards of directors nationwide, the influence of institutional investors, and the role of small shareholders. Hu was quoted on Kenneth Lay succession matters in the Chicago Sun-Times, Jan. 25, 2002, Milwaukee Journal & Sentinel, Jan. 25, 2002, and San Diego Union & Tribune, Jan. 25, 2002.

John Robertson was quoted in the New York Times, Feb. 16, 2002, on using preimplantation genetic diagnosis of embryos to create gender variety in families. On Feb. 23, 2002, Robertson spoke at the University of Mississippi on “Legal, Ethical, and Policy Issues in Embryonic Stem Cell Research.”

Gerald TorresThe Miner’s Canary: Enlisting Race, Resisting Power, Transforming Democracy (2002; with Lani Guinier) was reviewed in the Washington Post—National Weekly Edition, Feb. 18-24, 2002, at 32.

Jay Westbrook was interviewed on National Public Radio’s “All Things Considered” on Feb. 21, 2002, and on “Weekend All Things Considered,” Feb. 3, 2002, concerning the Enron bankruptcy. Westbrook commented on the fate of Enron shareholders and a possible reorganization, in the Feb. 13, 2002, Houston Chronicle. Westbrook was quoted on various aspects of the Enron bankruptcy in the Feb. 3, 2002, Austin American-Statesman, and in Cox News Service stories on Jan. 30, 2002, and Feb. 3, 2002. Westbrook was quoted several times in a series of feature articles on consumer bankruptcy in the Feb. 3, 2002, Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
