FACULTY ACTIVITIES

At the conference on “What We Know and Don’t Know about the Impact of Legal Services on the American Economy and Polity,” Feb. 1-2, 2002, sponsored by the Center on Lawyers, Civil Justice, and the Media and by the Texas Law Review: Frank Cross spoke on “Law and Economic Development”; Thomas McGarity presented “How Much Does Environmental Regulation Cost?”; Charles Silver spoke on “Does Civil Justice Cost Too Much?”; and Jay Westbrook delivered “Empirical Studies of Bankruptcy’s Causes and Effects.” Commentators at the conference included Lynn Baker, Lynn Blais, and Wendy Wagner. Dean William Powers gave welcoming remarks.

Henry Hu was quoted in the New York Times, Jan. 20, 2002, on the nature of Enron’s risk disclosures and a possible regulatory response. Hu discussed derivatives and their use in a story about Enron in the Baltimore Sun, Jan. 18, 2002. Hu was quoted on the limitations of auditing in Enron-related stories in the Dallas Morning News, Jan. 17, 2002, and Charlotte Observer, Jan. 18, 2002. Hu discussed policy concerns over “single stock futures,” an equity derivative shortly to be introduced in the U.S., in the Dallas Morning News, Jan. 15, 2002. Hu was quoted in the Wall Street Journal, Dec. 19, 2001, and Wall Street Journal Europe, Dec. 20, 2001 in a story relating to Optical Cable’s finances. Hu was quoted in the Los Angeles Times, Dec. 12, 2001, on a federal probe of the handling of initial public offerings by the investment bank Credit Suisse First Boston.

Stanley Johanson addressed the Beverly Hills (California) Bar Association, Jan. 18, 2002, on the impact of the 2001 Tax Act on estate planning.

Susan Klein served on the Committee on Pattern Jury Instructions, District Judges Association, Fifth Circuit, that revised The Fifth Circuit Pattern Jury Instructions (Criminal) (St. Paul: West, 2001).

Linda Mullenix was a commentator on “Perspectives on Dispute Resolution in the 21st Century,” a conference held at the William S. Boyd School of Law, University of Nevada, Jan. 25, 2002.

Neil Netanel spoke on “Copyright and the First Amendment” on Jan. 18, 2002, as part of the Boston University School of Law’s Intellectual Property Speakers Series.

H. W. Perry was an invited panel participant at the Conference on Constitutional Courts, held Nov. 1-3, 2001, at Washington University. Other participants at the conference included Jurgen Habermas, Ronald Dworkin, Frank Michaelman, Walter Murphy, John Ferejohn, and Robert Alexi.

Wayne Schiess spoke on “Ten New Things in Legal Research and Writing” to lawyers and legal assistants at the Austin law firm of Graves, Dougherty, Hearon & Moody on Jan. 23, 2002.

Ernest Smith will present a “Case Law Update” at the Law School’s 28th Annual Ernest E. Smith Oil, Gas and Mineral Law Institute, Mar. 22, 2002, in Houston.

Michael Sturley has been elected a “Titulary Member” of the Comité Maritime International (CMI) in recognition of his contributions to the CMI and to the field of international maritime law. He is the youngest American in living memory to be elected to Titulary Membership, and the first full-time academic. As the Rapporteur of the CMI’s International Sub-Committee on Issues of Transport Law, Sturley attended meetings in London (July 16-18, 2001), Vienna (Oct. 4-6, 2001), and Madrid (Nov. 12-14, 2001), as well as the CMI’s 37th Conference in Singapore, Feb. 11-17, 2001, where the International Sub-Committee’s work was the highlight of the conference. On Oct. 17, 2001, Sturley was the lead speaker at the Maritime Law Association’s annual CLE program in San Diego, discussing the international effort to reform transport law. Sturley attended a meeting of the World Shipping Council and the National Industrial Transportation League in Washington, D.C., Nov. 2, 2001, to discuss an industry compromise proposal on the future of cargo liability law. On Jan. 9, 2002, Sturley attended a meeting of the Secretary of State’s Advisory Committee on Private International Law in Washington, D.C., to discuss the U.S. negotiating strategy at the April 2002 session of the UNCITRAL Working Group on Transport Law. After this meeting, he was invited to be the Senior Adviser to the U.S. delegation.

Michael Sean Quinn will present “The 11 Commandments of Professional Responsibility” at the Law School’s 4th Annual Telecommunications Law Conference, Mar. 8, 2002, in Richardson.
