FACULTY ACTIVITIES At the conference organized by Zipporah Wiseman, “Subversive Legacies: Learning from History/Constructing the Future”, Nov. 22-23, 2002, at the Law School: Sarah Buel gave a talk on “Race, Class, Battered Women and Crime: The Paradox of Protection” and was the commentator for a session on “Violence Against Women”; Norma Cantú was a panelist for a session on “The Struggle for Sex Equality in Women’s Sports and the Theory of Title IX”; Jane Cohen was the commentator for a panel on “Feminist Views on Autonomy, Dependence and Difference”; Karen Engle moderated a roundtable on "Subversive Legal Moments?” and was commentator for a session on “Other Feminisms”; and Zipporah Wiseman delivered the welcoming remarks, chaired a session on “Subversion through Pedagogy: The Legacies and the Future” and moderated the concluding roundtable, “Is Subversion Subversive?”. At the Law School’s 11th Annual Admiralty and Maritime Law Institute, Oct. 18, 2002, in Houston, Michael Sturley presided over the morning session, and David Robertson presented a paper, “Recent Developments in Admiralty and Maritime Law at the National Level and in the Fifth and Eleventh Circuits,” that he co-authored with Sturley. Lynn Baker spoke on “Sources of Potential Liability for Attorneys in Group Settlements” as part of the Third Annual “Masters of Trial” Seminar, sponsored by the Houston Trial Lawyers Association, Nov. 15, 2002, in Houston. Baker was an invited participant in a Roundtable Discussion on “Constitutional Origins, Structure, and Change” held at Rutgers University on Nov. 23, 2002. The Roundtable is part of the “Global Dialogue on Federalism in the 21st Century” sponsored by the International Association of Centers for Federal Studies and the Forum of Federations. Sarah Buel received the Gary Bellow Public Service Alumni Award from Harvard Law School on Nov. 4, 2002, in recognition of her work with domestic violence victims. Buel has given keynote addresses at a number of recent conferences, including the College of Physicians in Philadelphia, Oct. 10, 2002 (“Avoiding Malpractice and Improving Care for Domestic Violence Patients: The Role of Physicians”); the Philadelphia Court System, Oct. 11, 2002 (“Examining the Intersections of Law and Social Policy in Effecting a Coordinated Community Response to Domestic Violence”); the Las Vegas Court Department Conference, Oct. 21, 2002 (“Confidentiality, Domestic Violence and the Law: Whose Privilege? Whose Life?”); the Southern California Medical Legal Conference in Los Angeles, Oct. 25, 2002 (“Family Violence: Ethical Interventions with Victims and Offenders in Complex Cases”); the National College of District Attorneys Annual Conference, Oct. 28, 2002, in Chicago (“Homeland Terrorism: Domestic Violence in America”); and the Virginia Child Protection Conference, Nov. 8, 2002, in Virginia Beach, Va. (“Reconciling Child Protection and Domestic Violence Interventions: Promising Court Practices”). Buel spoke “The Criminal Justice System and Violence Within the Family: Trends, Law and Policy” at the Waco Court Conference, Oct. 18, 2002. Henry Hu was quoted in the New York Times, Sept. 21, 2002, on complex financial transactions Enron entered into and the activities of the court-appointed examiner. Hu was quoted by Bloomberg News, Sept. 19, 2002, on NASD (National Association of Securities Dealers) concerns over banks using loans to obtain investment banking business. Hu was quoted in the Seattle Times, Sept. 18, 2002, on efforts of corporations to influence analyst hiring decisions at brokerages. Jordan Steiker gave a talk entitled “Resurrection of Proportionality Doctrine: The Significance and Scope of Atkins v. Virginia” on Oct. 28, 2002, at the Law School, at the program on mental retardation and the death penalty sponsored by the Center for American and International Law. Michael Sturley attended a meeting of the Secretary of State’s Advisory Committee on Private International Law on July 31, 2002, in Washington, DC, to discuss the U.S. government’s negotiating strategy at the Tenth Session of Working Group III (Transport Law) of the U.N. Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL). Sturley attended the Tenth Session of Working Group III (Transport Law) of UNCITRAL, Sept. 16-20, 2002, in Vienna as the Senior Adviser on the U.S. delegation and its principal spokesman on issues involving substantive transport law. The meetings were attended by government representatives from 48 countries, representatives from other U.N. organizations, 3 intergovernmental organizations (including the European Commission), and 9 non-governmental organizations representing various segments of industry. At the fall meeting of the Maritime Law Association (MLA) in New York, Oct. 29-Nov. 1, 2002, Sturley spoke concerning the work of the Tenth Session of Working Group III (Transport Law) of UNCITRAL to the MLA Committee on the Carriage of Goods, to the MLA Committee on the Comité Maritime International, and to the full Association. Louise Weinberg’s letter, “Tort Truths,” was published in the Austin-American Statesman on Nov. 21, 2002, at A20.
