FACULTY ACTIVITIES

Dean William Powers delivered the welcoming remarks at the Texas International Law Journal’s 2002 Symposium, “Judicialization and Globalization of the Judiciary,” Sept. 5-6, 2002, at the Law School, and Sarah Cleveland made the closing remarks. In between, the program included presentations by Carl Baudenbacher (“Judicial Globalization: Old Wine in New Bottles?”), Patricia Hansen (“Dispute Resolution Under NAFTA”), Steven Ratner (“The International Criminal Court: Probing the Limits of Judicialization”), Jay Westbrook (“International Judicial Negotiation”), and Ernest Young (“The Trouble with Global Constitutionalism”).

The Law School’s 26th Annual Page Keeton Products Liability and Personal Injury Conference, Oct. 3-4, 2002, in Austin, will include a “Products Liability Update” by Dean William Powers, a “Procedure Update” by Alex Albright, a presentation on “Legal Ethics: A Litigator’s Guide to Recognizing and Dealing with Conflict Issues” by John Dzienkowski, an “Evidence Update” by Steven Goode, and Tracy McCormack as part of a luncheon presentation, “The Ethics Gameshow.”

Lynn Baker and Mitchell Berman filed an amicus brief in the U.S. Supreme Court in support of Respondents in Pierce County v. Guillen, who claim that certain federal legislation exceeds Congress’ power under the Spending Clause and Commerce Clause.

At the Law School’s 11th Annual Admiralty and Maritime Law Institute, Oct. 18, 2002, in Houston, David Robertson will present “Recent Developments in Admiralty and Maritime Law at the National Level and in the 5th and 11th Circuits,” and Ernest Young will speak on “Why the Federal Common Law of Admiralty is Unconstitutional and Why Maritime Lawyers Should Care.”

Lynn Baker took part in the 2002 World Bridge Championships in Montreal, Canada, in August, where her team finished in fifth place (tie) in the Women’s Teams.

Henry Hu was quoted in Fortune, June 10, 2002, on litigation against Merrill Lynch and other investment banks in connection with the recommendations of their securities analysts. Hu was quoted on his reactions to Goldman Sachs chairman Henry Paulson’s efforts in respect of American corporate governance in the Wall Street Journal, June 7, 2002, and the Asian Wall Street Journal, June 10, 2002.

Stanley Johanson spoke on “Recent Developments in Estate Planning” at the Houston Estate & Financial Forum, Sept. 13, 2002. On Sept. 20, 2002, Johanson gave a seminar on “Charitable Gift Planning” sponsored by the Dallas Jewish Community Foundation. Johanson spoke on “Recent Developments Affecting Estate Planning” at the Southern Federal Tax Institute in Atlanta, Sept. 27, 2002.

Terri LeClercq was quoted in The Quest for Scholarship: The Legal Writing Professor’s Paradox, 80 Oregon L.Rev. 1013 (2001). LeClercq was recently elected to the Editorial Board for the Journal of Legal Writing.

Brian Leiter has been appointed to the Program Committee for the 2004 meeting of the Central Division of the American Philosophical Association in Chicago. The Program Committee is charged with designing symposia and lectures on the meeting’s theme that year, which will emphasize the interaction between philosophy and other disciplines (law, psychology, economics, biology, physics, etc.).

Tracy McCormack was the instructor for “The Jury Trial,” a Law School CLE program, on Aug. 23, 2002, in Austin. McCormack will present the program again on Sept. 20, 2002, in El Paso, and Sept. 27, 2002, in Dallas.

John Robertson spoke on “Ethical and Legal Issues in DNA Biobanking” at the 3rd International Conference on DNA Sampling, Sept. 7, 2002, in Montreal. On Aug. 27, 2002, Robertson gave a talk to the Texas Judicial Conference in San Antonio on “Legal Issues in Assisted Reproduction.”

Wayne Schiess spoke on “Statutory Interpretation for Trial Lawyers” at the State Bar’s Advanced Civil Trial Course in Dallas, Aug. 30, 2002, and will address the same topic for this course in Houston on Oct. 11, 2002, and in San Antonio on Nov. 1, 2002.

Louise Weinberg’s letter, “Europe Isn’t Blameless,” appeared in the Austin American-Statesman, Aug. 28, 2002, at A14.
