Christy Nisbitt and Wayne Schiess will be the instructors for “Legal Writing,” a Law School CLE program, on Aug. 28, 2002, in Austin, Sept. 6, 2002, in San Antonio, Sept. 18, 2002, in El Paso, and Sept. 25, 2002, in Dallas.

David Robertson and Michael Sturley’s Admiralty and Maritime Law in the United States: Cases and Materials (2001; with Steven F. Friedell) was reviewed at 33 Journal of Maritime Law & Commerce 409 (2002).

Philip Bobbitt was interviewed on National Public Radio’s “Weekend Edition,” Aug. 18, 2002, on his new book The Shield of Achilles: War, Peace, and the Course of History (2002). The book was reviewed in The Weekly Standard, Aug. 26/Sept. 2, 2002, at 36.

Sarah Buel delivered a number of keynote addresses during the summer, including “The Criminalization of Domestic Violence: Ethical Practice for Prosecutors and Law Enforcement,” June 13, 2002, in Columbus, Ohio; “The Paradox of Community Outrage and Apathy: Promising Practices to Improve Domestic Violence Interventions,” June 21, 2002, in DuPage County, Ill.; “Taking Domestic Violence Seriously: The Mandate for Collaboration in Urban Courts,” sponsored by the Las Vegas Courts, June 27, 2002; “Taking Domestic Violence Seriously: The Role of Law Enforcement,” at the National Sheriff’s Association Rural Law Enforcement Conference, July 12, 2002, in Baker City, Ore.; “Rethinking the Role of Domestic Violence in Legal Practice,” July 20, 2002, at Kansas Bar Association Annual Meeting in Lindsborg; “Employer Liability For Inappropriate Interventions With Abuse Victims in the Workplace,” at the Louisiana Attorney General’s Labor Law Conference, Aug. 15, 2002, in Baton Rouge; and “Public Safety Risk and the Transformation of Domestic Violence Law,” Aug. 20, 2002, at the National Organization of Victim Assistance annual conference in Nashville. Buel presented a day-long “Institute Reconciling Rhetoric, Doctrine and Practice in Domestic Violence Practice,” sponsored by the National Council of Juvenile & Family Court Judges, June 11, 2002, in Lynchburg, Va. Buel delivered a guest lecture on July 26, 2002, at UT-San Antonio’s Institute for Law & Public Affairs, entitled “The Personal as Political in Practicing Domestic Violence Law.”

Charles Childress presented a CLE program on “Representing Texas Children in Abuse and Neglect Cases” in Athens, Texas, on Mar. 22, 2002, and in Corpus Christi on Apr. 12, 2002. Childress gave a workshop for judges on “Opportunities & Pitfalls in Abuse/Neglect Litigation” at the Texas Center for the Judiciary , May 23, 2002, in Austin. Childress spoke on the Uniform Parentage Act in Texas at a seminar for attorneys of the Texas Department of Protective and Regulatory Services, July 24, 2002, in Austin.

Henry Hu was quoted in the Nihon Keizai Shinbun (Japan’s leading business newspaper), June 6, 2002, on why investment bankers had leverage over securities analysts in the United States. Hu was quoted on “pro forma” earnings in the “Heard on the Street” column in the Wall Street Journal, May 28, 2002, Wall Street Journal Europe, May 28, 2002, and Asian Wall Street Journal, May 29, 2002, and in the Globe & Mail (Toronto), May 28, 2002. Hu’s “Heard on the Street” comments were noted by Bloomberg, May 28, 2002. Hu discussed the relationship between the confidence of stock market investors and current corporate scandals in the Dallas Morning News, May 24, 2002. Hu was quoted in the Washington Post, May 24, 2002, on complications posed by enforcement activities of state authorities for financial institutions.

Terri LeClercq gave the plenary address before 400 members of the Institute of Legal Writing, entitled “Past, Present, and Future of the Legal Writing Institute,” on May 29, 2002, in Knoxville, Tenn. LeClercq also presented a session during the conference, with Dr. Anthony Palasota of Thurgood Marshall School of Law, on “Incorporating Logic into the Legal Writing Classroom.”

Brian Leiter (ed.), Objectivity in Law and Morals (Cambridge University Press, 2001) was reviewed at 65 Modern Law Review 634 (2002). After one month, Leiter’s paper “Beyond the Hart/Dworkin Debate” on the SSRN on-line database has been downloaded nearly 100 times, making it the #1 paper in the category “University of Texas Law School, Public Law & Legal Theory” and the #2 paper in the “Jurisprudence” category.

Anthony Reese was quoted in the Abilene Reporter-News, Aug. 22, 2002, on the Republican National Committee’s demand that a Democratic congressman cease using President Bush’s image in campaign ads.

Ernest Young has been chosen President-Elect of the Maritime Law Section of the Association of American Law Schools and will assume the presidency in January 2003.
