Summary: An ambitious young lawyer struggles against temptation and scandal in this miniseries filled with passion and political intrigue. Through four decades, Lewis Eliot's(Seymour) personal trials and professional triumphs carry him from the courtroom to success as a civil servant, teacher, and writer -- yet tragedy always lurks just ahead.
Disc 1:  Ep. 1: 1927-30. Lewis Eliot has just passed the bar and resolves to become a powerful attorney, along the way falling in love with the beautiful but mentally unstable daughter, Sheila Knight (Ruskin) of the local parson, and meeting the well-to-do March family.
Ep. 2: 1931-22: Lewis' marriage is faltering and the March's are involved in a scandalous fraud, which leads to a trial.
Ep. 3: 1935-36: Lewis accepts a college teaching position and struggles to help an old friend with an addiction.
Ep. 4: Sept.-Dec. 1936: A questionable stock gain, a marital indiscretion, slander and disinheritance take over Lewis' life.
Disc 2: Ep. 5: Jan.-March 1937:  War is coming on the international scene and local politics at Cambridge bring about terrible decisions.
Ep. 6: Spring-Summer 1939: Lewis travels to Berlin to rescue his old friend Roy Calvert (Havers).
Ep. 7: Dec. 1941-Nov. 1942: England and America are racing to build the first atomic bomb, Roy tests his destiny by flying dangerous bombing missions and Lewis is haunted by Sheila's death.
Ep. 8: March 1944-Aug. 1945: Lewis investigates a suspected Russian spy and the U.S. drops the bomb on Hiroshima. Germany surrenders.
Disc 3: Ep. 9: Aug. 1945-June 1946: Even as Britain protests American use of the bomb, it continues to develop its own. Eliot comes into conflict with his brother.
Ep. 10: Summer 1946-Summer 1949: Lewis rekindles his love affair with Margaret (Lunghi), who leaves her doctor-husband (Heffer) for a life with Lewis.
Ep. 11: Spring 1955-Spring 1957: Lewis is knighted and the power-hungry Roger Quaife (Hopkins) becomes the new Secretary of State but the Suez Canal Crisis thwarts his plans.
Ep. 12: Sept. 1957-March 1958: It is discovered that Roger Quaife has been having an affair with the wife of politician opposed to Quaife's non-nuclear defense policy. It appears that his downfall is imminent. Lewis leaves his civil service career to become a writer.
Disc 4: Ep. 13: 1964-65: Lewis succeeds as a writer but still yearns for the political arena. He also weighs his chances with a risky operation to restore his eyesight. After a near death experience he reassesses his past and future.
