Please note, the Tarlton Law Library will be closed December 20 - January 1. We will respond to reference questions submitted during this time as soon as possible after the Library reopens in January. 

Reference librarians are available to help patrons locate information and to provide assistance in legal research methodology. However, they do not perform research for patrons and may not provide substantive legal advice or interpret legal materials for the benefit of patrons.

All reference librarians at Tarlton Law Library have Master’s degrees in Information Science; many have J.D. degrees as well. Several of our reference librarians specialize in certain subjects and can recommend appropriate print and electronic resources. Additionally, we have librarians dedicated to managing collections and providing research assistance in the areas of foreign and international lawgovernment documents, and rare books and special collections, generally available 9am-5pm, Monday-Friday.

Reference librarians are accessible by various means:

  • Text or online chat (UT EID required) - available during current reference hours.
  • E-mail - Send brief, ready-reference questions and receive answers by email. We make an effort to respond to all inquiries within one to two business days.
  • In person - the reference desk, located on the main floor of the Library, is typically staffed according to the following schedule: 

    Monday-Thursday, 8am-8pm
    Friday , 8am-6pm
    Saturday & Sunday, 12pm-6pm
