Services for UT Law Faculty

The Library's document delivery service allows faculty members to have books, articles, conference papers, and reports delivered directly to mailboxes in the Communication Center. UT Law faculty can submit requests in person at the Circulation Desk, via email to docs@law.utexas.edu,  through faculty liaisons, or by using the online faculty document delivery form.  A list of frequently asked questions regarding the document delivery service is available.

  • Materials available in the Library will normally be delivered within 24 hours on weekdays, or on the following Monday for requests submitted on Fridays and weekends.
  • Materials available at other UT Austin libraries will be delivered within 3 business days. Faculty members must have a completed proxy form on file.
  • Materials not available at UT Austin may be available through interlibrary loan.  These materials will generally be delivered within 2 weeks.

Library staff members will also return books borrowed by faculty members from other UT Libraries.  However, the books may not be returned on the same day. To avoid overdue fines, please send books from other UT Libraries to the Law Library at least 3 business days before the due date. For more information about the document delivery program contact Joe Noel at jnoel@law.utexas.edu, 512-232-3801.

Services for UT Law Students

Materials not available on the UT Austin campus may be obtained for law students through interlibrary loan. Outside libraries may furnish copies of articles upon request or may agree to loan entire books or other resources. There is occasionally a charge associated with obtaining materials through interlibrary loan.

Copies of articles available through interlibrary loan are usually available within 7 days of the request. Books or other resources are usually available within 2 weeks.

When borrowing from another institution, the library that provides the materials sets the loan period (usually 2 or 3 weeks) and the renewal policy. Borrowers assume responsibility for any overdue or damaged material fines assessed by the institution that lends the materials. Please note that these services are restricted to currently enrolled students in the UT Law School.

If a resource cannot be located on TALLONS, students should check the UT Libraries online catalog to determine if the resource is available elsewhere on campus.

If it is not available anywhere on campus, students may submit a request using ILLiad, the Interlibrary Loan Office's interlibrary loan system. Once an account is established, students may login to check the status of requests, submit changes, and request renewals. An FAQ provides additional information on ILLiad and its associated services.

Borrowers will be notified by e-mail when the Library receives the requested materials, and the item(s) may be picked up at the Circulation Desk.

Some materials are especially hard to borrow from other libraries, including:

  • audio/visual materials
  • reference materials
  • issues of journals
  • archival materials (manuscripts, papers, etc.)
  • dissertations and theses

Copies of past exams or instructors' manuals for law school course books are not available through interlibrary loan.

Services for Non-UT Affiliated Users, Including Law Firms

Document delivery

Document delivery requests can be submitted using an online form. As a rule, copies of articles, conference papers, and reports housed at the Library can be available within 48 hours of the request. Please check TALLONS, the online catalog for the Library, to determine if the Library owns the material and to obtain the precise citation required for the submission. Please note that the Library staff cannot perform research for you, so document delivery requests must have the correct citations.

The Library's document delivery service is provided as a courtesy to users.  The Library may refuse document requests where fulfillment would require extensive staff time.

An invoice, payable upon receipt, will be included with the document for requests submitted from law firms or attorneys.  Payment must be made by check. We do not accept credit cards. Other requestors may be required to pay prior to delivery with a certified check or money order.

Charges for regular service (48 hour turnaround) are:

  • a per citation fee of $10 plus
  • a per page fee of 75¢ for USPS mail delivery or
  • a per page fee of 50¢ for electronic delivery (e-mail or fax).

Charges for expedited service (3 hour turnaround available on weekdays, requests must be received by 1pm CST) are:

  • a per citation fee of $35. plus
  • a per page fee of 75¢ for USPS mail delivery or
  • a per page fee of 50¢ for electronic delivery (e-mail or fax).

In addition to the above charges, the following surcharges may apply:

  • a $5 per citation fee if the source document is in microform format
  • a $20 per citation special handling fee if the citation or the contact information is incorrect or incomplete.

Unless otherwise requested, all items will be sent out by USPS mail.

Interlibrary loan

Interlibrary loan requests may be made through OCLC WorldCat Resource Sharing or ILLiad. Tarlton Law Library's holdings symbol is TXQ.

If your institution does not have access to OCLC, interlibrary loan requests may be submitted through an online form. Each filled request will be assessed a $15 processing fee. An invoice, payable upon receipt, will be included with the shipment.
