Andrew Jackson ("Jack") Pope, Jr. (b. 1913)
Texas Supreme Court,
Chief Justice, Texas Supreme Court, 1982-1985
Andrew Jackson "Jack" Pope, Jr. was born April 18, 1913 in Abilene, Texas, where his father was a physician. After graduating from Abilene High School in 1930, Pope earned a B.A. degree from Abilene Christian College (now Abilene Christian University), where he was a student leader. He graduated from ACU in 1934 and entered the University of Texas School of Law, where he served as student editor of the Texas Law Review and earned an LL.B. in 1937.
Pope was licensed to practice law in 1937, moved to Corpus Christi, and joined the law firm of his uncle, Walter E. Pope, a former state representative. He also became president of his uncle's passenger bus service, Highway Transportation Company, which provided service to Corpus Christi, Houston, and San Antonio. In 1938 Pope was married; the couple had two sons.
During the Second World War Pope enlisted in the Naval Reserve and was stationed in San Diego, Washington, D.C., and Corpus Christi. Following the war he formed a law partnership in Corpus Christi with O.E. Cannon and Sam Pittman.
Pope's judicial career began in 1946 when Gov. Coke Stevenson appointed him to fill an unexpired term as judge of the Ninety-Fourth District Court. Gov. Beauford Jester appointed him to a four-year term for the same position beginning in 1947. In 1950 Gov. Allan Shivers appointed Pope to fill an unexpired term on the Fourth Court of Civil Appeals at San Antonio; he was elected to three successive six-year terms that began in January 1951.
In 1964 Pope was elected an associate justice of the Texas Supreme Court. He held that post until October 1982, when Joe R. Greenhill resigned as chief justice and Gov. William P. Clements appointed him to fill the vacancy as chief justice. Pope served as chief justice until retiring in January 1985.
Pope has served on the board of trustees of his alma mater, Abilene Christian University, since 1954 and was named the school's outstanding alumnus in 1965.
