Ernest Walter Belcher (1901-1976)

Judge, Texas Court of Criminal Appeals, 1967-1970

Ernest Walter Belcher was born September 20, 1901, in Erath County, Texas, southwest of Fort Worth. He attended public schools in Stephenville and John Tarleton College (now Tarleton State University) before entering The University of Texas School of Law. He was a charter member of the Texas Law Review.

Belcher was admitted to the Texas bar in 1927 and began his law career that year in Stephenville, practicing law, serving as county attorney from 1929 to 1932, as district attorney of the Twenty-ninth Judicial District from 1933 to 1940, and as judge of the Twenty-ninth Judicial District from 1940 to 1952.

In 1952 Belcher was appointed a commissioner of the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals, and served in that position from 1953 until 1966. He served as a judge of the court in from 1967 until retiring in 1970.

Belcher died in May 29, 1976 in Austin at the age of seventy-four. He was buried in the Texas State Cemetery.
