Engineering Versus Law
The rivalry between law and engineering students at the University of Texas at Austin is well documented and stretches over a century. Unfortunately, the Peregrinus and Alexander Frederick Claire have historically suffered as a result. Numerous copies of both mascots have suffered kidnappings, maiming, and untimely destruction. In 1987 two engineers recaptured Alec’s Torso (which was at that time held hostage by the law school and stored in the law library), and then demanded the Peregrinus as ransom. The affair eventually went to court, where a good-natured Judge Harley Clark (UT Law 1962) presided. The timeline of the rivalry was chronicled in the 2003 Peregrinus Yearbook. An alternative history may be found in the pamphlet “Precious Memories: A Historical Tribute to the Engineering/Law Rivalry,” put out by the engineering students.
