This research guide is designed to introduce researching the law of the United Kingdom using the materials available both in Tarlton Law Library and online. The focus will be on freely available online resources, but some reference will be made to sources available on Westlaw, Lexis and HeinOnline. Note that Scots law and Northern Ireland law differ in several ways from English law, both institutionally and substantively. This guide deals with legal research that applies to the United Kingdom as a whole.
This graphic shows the judicial structure in England. Scotland and Northern Ireland have different judicial systems. A detailed PDF chart at the website of the UK Supreme Court displays all three judicial systems in operation in the United Kingdom.
