Constitution of the State of Texas (1845)

BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE REPUBLIC OF TEXAS

A PROCLAMATION.


Whereas, the "constitution of the State of Texas," adopted in convention by the deputies of the people of Texas on the 28th day of August, A. D. 1845, has been ratified by a majority of the votes polled at an election held in the several counties of the republic, on the 13th ultimo; and

Whereas, by said constitution it is made the duty of the President to issue his proclamation directing and requiring elections to be held in all the counties of the republic for governor and lieutenant governor, and members of the Senate and House of Representatives of the State legislature:

Therefore, be it known, that I, Anson Jones, President of the republic of Texas, by virtue of the authority vested in me, do hereby order and direct that elections be held in the several counties of the republic on the third Monday (the fifteenth day) of December next, for governor and lieutenant governor, and for senators and representatives to the State legislature, in accordance with the appointment of representation directed by said constitution, to wit: the district composed of the counties of Fannin and Lamar, one senator; of the counties of Red River and Bowie, one senator; of the counties of Fannin, Lamar, Red River, and Bowie, conjointly, one senator; of the county of Harrison, one senator; of the counties of Nacogdoches, Rusk, and Houston, two senators; of the counties of San Augustine and Shelby, one senator; of the counties of Sabine and Jasper, one senator; of the counties of Liberty and Jefferson, one senator; of the counties of Robertson and Brazos, one senator; of the county of Montgomery, one senator; of the county of Harris, one senator; of the county of Galveston, one senator; of the counties of Brazoria and Matagorda, one senator; of the counties of Austin and Fort Bend, one senator; of the counties of Colorado and Fayette, one senator; of the counties of Bastrop and Travis, one senator; of the counties of Washington and Milam, one senator; of the counties of Victoria, Gonzales, and Jackson, one senator; of the county of Bexar, one senator; and of the counties of Goliad, Refugio, and San Patricio, one senator. The county of Montgomery, four representatives; the counties of Red River, Harrison, Nacogdoches, Harris, and Washington, three representatives each; the counties of Fannin, Lamar, Bowie, Shelby, San Augustine, Rusk, Houston, Sabine, Liberty, Robertson, Galveston, Brazoria, Fayette, Colorado, Austin, Gonzales, and Bexar, two representatives each: the counties of Jefferson, Jasper, Brazos, Milam, Bastrop, Travis, Matagorda, Jackson, Fort Bend, Victoria, Refugio, Goliad, and San Patricio, one representative each.


And it is further ordered and directed, that the chief justices of the counties aforesaid give due notice of the said elections, appoint presiding officers in the several precincts, who will appoint the judges and clerks of said elections, and have the same conducted according to the constitution and laws regulating elections, and make due returns thereof to the Department of State, in accordance with the provisions of the seventh section of the thirteenth article of the constitution aforesaid.
