500 Years of Legal Language: Tarlton's Law Dictionary Collection

Scandals, a scathing review, a Scotsman's challenge, a political coup, writers in jail, touchy monarchs, and Ovid. You'll find all of this, as part of a fascinating introduction to the history of legal dictionaries from one of the finest collections of its kind, in the new exhibit in the atrium of the UT Law School: "500 Years of Legal Language: The Law Dictionary Collection at Tarlton Law Library"

This exhibit, in conjunction with the Language & the Law Conference on Dec. 6-8, 2001, celebrates the acquisition of Tarlton's symbolic Millionth and Million-and-First Volumes, both of which are law dictionaries.

Tarlton has a long history of collecting legal dictionaries and now has one of the finest collections of rare legal dictionaries in the world. The exhibit surveys a selection of works from this collection and tells fascinating stories of the works and their authors, including the new landmark volumes. It also describes the relevance of historic law dictionaries to modern legal research.

Tarlton's rare law dictionary collection is described and annotated in detail in the annotated Law Dictionary Collection Bibliography prepared by members of the Library's Rare Books & Special Collections staff.

The exhibit, curated by Amy Filiatreau, Archivist, will be on display in the Townes Hall Atrium through March 1, 2002.
