Sir John Glynne (1603-1666)

Glynne

Engraving by James Caldwall. Image size: 5 1/4 wide by 5 7/8 inches. Accession 2471.

Chief Justice of the Upper Bench (1655-1660, during the English Commonwealth period). An able lawyer, he conducted his judicial office justly and impartially. Along with Maynard, appointed King's Serjeant upon the Restoration. Rode with Maynard in Charles II's coronation procession. Pepys, a truer Royalist, despised both for their shifting political loyalties.
