Originally, each Inn of Chancery taught the rudiments of law and served as a preparatory college to one of the Inns of Court (principal educational and professional societies for the practice of law in England). Furnival's Inn received its name around 1408 but may have housed law students before 1383. Its imposing facade dated from the time of Charles II, but no trace of the building remains.
