Esteemed for his learning and integrity. Appointed Chief Baron of the Court of Exchequer (1660), Chief Justice of the Court of Common Pleas (1660-1667), Lord Keeper of the Great Seal (1667-1672). Not successful as Keeper. Dismissed for refusal to endorse measures he considered contrary to law. Relinquished the Seal to Shaftesbury.
