Abigail Schultz
Abigail, Access services librarian, left Tarlton to become the public services coordinator at the Texas State Law Library.

Dena Melvin
Dena Melvin joined Tarlton as the assistant to both the Foreign and International Law librarian and the Government Documents librarian. She recently graduated (May 2008) with a Master’s in Library Information Science from the University of North Texas. While not at work, Dena enjoys reading, spending time with friends and family, and volunteering at various Austin events.

Daniel Harrison
Daniel came to the library after graduating from UT Austin with a bachelor’s degree in Religious Studies. Prior to assuming his full-time position, he served the library as a student worker in the serials department, a job which he started in the Spring semester of 2006. He is originally from Beaumont, TX and plans to attend the University of Georgia School of Law in the fall. He wants to thank all of you who have helped to make his year at Tarlton a fantastic learning experience.

Tarlton Law Library announces: Justices of Texas 1836-1986
A new online resource developed by the Tarlton Law Library describes the 160 individuals who as members of the Texas Supreme Court and Texas Court of Criminal Appeals from 1836 to 1986 shaped the rights of Texas citizens. Justices of Texas was funded by a grant from The University of Texas at Austin and is part of Tarlton’s Texas legal history digital library.

Professor Roy M. Mersky and Richard Leiter presented the Spirit of Law Librarianship Award to Suzanne Morrison
The Spirit of Law Librarianship is an award presented annually to a Law Librarian who has made a meaningful contribution to a social or charitable cause or concern. This year the award was given to Suzanne Morrison, U.S. court of Appeals, 8th Circuit, Branch Librarian for North and South Dakota. Ms. Morrison was nominated by Jesse Wallace Burchfield of the University of Arkansas/ Little Rock Pulaske county Law Library.

Tarlton Law Library Receives Prestigious American Association of Law Libraries Award
The award recognized Tarlton’s online current awareness services, namely, the copyright & capital punishment current literature services . This was the second year in a row that Tarlton received a Law Library Publication Award from the American Association of Law Libraries. The award was announced at the Association’s annual meeting in New Orleans on July 15, 2007.

A Day in the Life of the Law Library Community Photo Contest (AALL)
Two photos, taken by and depicting Tarlton staff, were bestowed awards in the contest:

In Category I: Librarians as Information Evaluators and Managers, the photo “Making Order out of Chaos” by Scott Webel and submitted by reference librarian Melissa Bernstein was awarded 2nd place. The photo shows acquisitions librarian Pierrette Moreno hard at work in her office creating records for new books and serials and wrangling with vendors.

In Category III: Librarians as Teachers and Trainers, the photo “Law of the (Shelving) log” by Scott Webel and submitted by reference librarian Melissa Bernstein was also awarded 2nd place. The photo shows Cathy Mantor-Ramirez, assistant director for technical and access service, training (former) reference librarian Monique Gonzalez and (former) rare books librarian Mark Lambert about the collection services shelving log while collection management assistant Kristi Floyd looks on.

Tarlton Fellowships
The Tarlton Fellowships provide support to lawyers who are pursuing graduate degrees in information science. During a two year period, Tarlton Fellows contribute to the Tarlton Law Library’s instructional and research services while enrolled in UT’s graduate School of Information.

Leslie Ashbrook, a graduate of the University of Missouri-Columbia and a member of the Missouri Bar, began her second year as a Tarlton Fellow.

Leslie was joined in September by David McClure, a graduate of the University of Nebraska School of Law. Over the years former Tarlton Fellows have found employment in, among other environments, the United States Supreme Court Library, the Libraries of Rutgers-Newark, and Ohio State Law Schools.

Roy Mersky appointed to American Association of Law Libraries Advisory Board
Professor Mersky was appointed to the American Association of Law Libraries Advisory Board to assist in the planning of the China-United States Conference on Legal Information and Law Libraries, to be held in Beijing in May 2009.

August 2007

Olga Eckert
Olga Eckert, from the circulation department, accepted a position as circulation supervisor at the Austin Community College south campus library.

Visiting Scholars Program
The Law Library/Law School Visiting Scholars Program is booming. Jonathan Pratter, International Law Librarian, administers the program. Currently, Tarlton has 8 Visiting Scholars, 4 from South Korea, 3 from China, and 1 from Croatia. Beginning next fall we will add Visiting Scholars from Mexico and Brazil to the mix.

LL.M. and Exchange Student Introduction to Legal Research
As new LL.M. and exchange students arrive in the fall the Tarlton Law Library staff plays an important role in acclimating students to the Law School and to legal research at Tarlton and in the U.S. Tarlton Law Library staff held several sessions dedicated to different areas of legal research. Interim coordinator of public services Jane O'Connell presented on case law, reference librarian Casey Duncan spoke on legislative materials, reference librarian Melissa Bernstein addressed administrative law materials, and senior Tarlton fellow Leslie Ashbrook spoke about secondary sources.

Archival Processing by Graduate Students
Rare Books & Special Collections once again hosted seven of Dr. David B. Gracy’s archival processing students as they undertook two archival processing projects this past fall. The students processed the Graham B. Smedley and the James W. McClendon papers, which came to the Tarlton in 1960. Although both groups produced exemplary work, Jennifer Cummings would like to give special mention to the Smedley group members Jessica Sanders and Alta Valliant, who completed an amended version of their project following the unexpected death of group member Eliza Sudol.

September 2007

Scott Webel
Former administrative assistant and digital publishing specialist Scott Webel bid us farewell as he went off to pursue his PhD in Anthropology.

Melanie Cofield
A recent graduate of the UT graduate School of Information, Melanie has taken over Scott Webel's duties at Tarlton, under the new title of electronic publishing specialist. She received her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree at the University of Georgia in 1995, and then moved to Austin, spending nearly a decade working as library and instructional technology support staff at Austin Community College. In addition to her love of art and libraries, Melanie enjoys the challenge and adventure of digital library development and digital preservation.

September Law School Employee of the Month – Gloria Griggs - September 1, 2007
Gloria is the Law Library’s bookkeeper and is responsible for paying for all of the materials that make up the Law Library’s Collection and for taking care of all the myriad details involved in the process. The Employee of the Month award recognizes the important role Gloria plays in the smooth operations of the Law Library. Gloria handles a difficult and challenging job with grace, promptness and efficiency.

Professor Mersky's Birthday Party - September 4, 2007
Library staff hosted a party sponsored by Lexis/Nexis in the Gwyn Anderson Staff Lounge to celebrate Professor Mersky’s birthday (September 1). Ice cream, cake, and camaraderie were shared by all.

 

 

Introduction to Legal Research for Sports Law Graduate Students - September 18, 2007
Leslie Ashbrook, senior Tarlton fellow, spoke to kinesiology professor Dr. Woolf’s graduate sports law class. Leslie introduced the students to the basics of how to understand legal citations, discussed primary and secondary sources and different aspects of sports law. She also highlighted different books in the Tarlton Law Library collection and various databases UT subscribes to that would be useful for students when researching sports law for their class projects.

Book Committee of the Philosophical Society of Texas - September 24, 2007
Professor Mersky joined the book committee for the 2008 year, per the invitation of Lonn Taylor. Each member of the committee usually receives 30 or 40 volumes to review, and sends a list of their top six candidates to select the winning volume.

October 2007

George Pasterk
George is a Las Vegas native and joined Tarlton as a circulation assistant at Tarlton in October. George comes to us with fifteen years of library experience, most recently as a Library Assistant in the Media and Computer Resources Dept and the Reference service pool at the University of Nevada Las Vegas in the Lied Library. George also has a degree in Art History and considers himself fortunate to have once met Tiny Tim in the Las Vegas airport.

Tarlton Law Library announced the publication of Inaugural Rare Books Lecture
On February 24, 2004 Dr. Michael H. Hoeflich delivered the first Tarlton Law Library Rare Books Lecture, titled “Subscription Publishing and the Sale of Law Books in Antebellum America.” The text of Professor Hoeflich’s lecture was made available in October as the latest volume in the Tarlton Law Library Legal History Series.

Humanities Texas: Byrne-Reed House visit - October 12, 2007
Professor Roy Mersky, a member of Humanities Texas (the state affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities), attended the board alumni luncheon and tour of the historic Byrne-Reed House. The Byrne-Reed House is currently the headquarters for Humanities Texas. The house was built more than a century ago, and reflects a Texas vernacular style that combines popular architectural trends of the period. Humanities Texas plans to restore the house integrating the best practices of historic preservation and environmental sustainability.

State Bar of Wisconsin - October 16, 2007
The State Bar of Wisconsin expressed its appreciation by awarding a certificate to Roy M. Mersky in recognition of outstanding service as a member of the Law-Related Education Committee 2005-2007.

Teaching the Teachers Conference: Effective Instruction in Legal Research - October 18-20, 2007
The conference endeavored to begin the process of preparing members of the legal profession to teach the next generation of law students in a time of enormous changes in information discovery, content, and delivery. Presentations focused on widely applicable principles of effective teaching and communication, rather than on the nuts and bolts of legal research. Casey Duncan did a wonderful job as Program Coordinator. The conference was a success thanks to all the Tarlton staff, particularly Leslie Ashbrook, Registration Coordinator, and George Peek, who provided organizational support.

Learning to Look for the Law exhibit
Prepared in conjunction with the conference Teaching the Teachers: Effective Instruction in Legal Research, the exhibit traced the history of legal research instruction in the United States from the 1800s through the present. Reference librarian Melissa Bernstein researched the exhibit, and worked with electronic publishing specialist Melanie Cofield and archivist Jennifer Cummings to design and install the exhibit in atrium display cases.

Monique Gonzalez
Former access services librarian Monique Gonzalez accepted a position that allowed her to return to practice and, at the same time, continue to engage in law librarianship.

Conference – The UN Human Rights Council: the First Two Years, Florence Italy - November 7-8, 2007
Professor Francesco Francioni invited Jonathan Pratter, Tarlton’s foreign and international law librarian, to the European University Institute in Florence, Italy to attend the conference, entitled the “The UN Human Rights Council: the First Two Years.” The Conference was attended by human rights scholars from a number of countries.

Research Refreshments Series - November 6 & 13, 2007
Two research classes were co-sponsored by LexisNexis and Westlaw and taught by Monique Gonzalez, former reference librarian, and Leslie Ashbrook, Tarlton Fellow. The “Administrative Law Research” class taught attendees how to research the activities of government agencies, and the “Using Secondary Sources” explained how to enhance legal research using secondary sources.

Tarlton Law Library Collection on Children’s Rights
David Avila Pratter celebrated his 10th birthday in traditional fashion by making yet another contribution to the Tarlton Law Library Collection on Children’s Rights. David typically donates books on children’s rights that invite best legal approach, and most effective action in the assessment of participation, education and opportunities for the young generation. David and his mother, Gloria E. Avila, know that without David’s support, Tarlton would not be able to collect as strongly in the area of children’s rights as it is able to do through his annual donations.

Brian Martin
After 3 years serving as Tarlton Law Library’s office manager, Brian left Tarlton to become the administrative services officer in Human Resource Services for the University of Texas at Austin.

Cooperation agreement between Tarlton Law Library and Library of the Senate of Brazil
Representing Roy Mersky and the Tarlton Law Library at the invitation of Judge Antonio Benjamin, Jonathan Pratter participated in official events in Rio de Janeiro, Brasilia, and Porto Alegre, Brazil. The main event was the signing in Brasilia of a cooperation agreement between the Tarlton Law Library and the Library of the Senate of Brazil.

Blackstone Symposium – University of Adelaide, Australia - December 14-15, 2007
Roy Mersky attended the Blackstone Symposium, an international conference on the life, thought and influence of Sir William Blackstone (1723-1780), author of Commentaries on the Laws of England, the most influential law book in the English language. Professor Mersky presented a bibliography on Blackstone which was compiled with the help of senior Tarlton fellow Leslie Ashbrook. His speech for the symposium was written with the assistance of reference librarian Melissa Bernstein.

February 2008

New Business Manager
Frances Chih joined Tarlton as the business manager in February. She previously worked as office manager at the UT Center for Lifelong Engineering Education for 4 years. She has a bachelor’s degree in English from Tankang University and a master’s degree in education from St. John’s University in New York. In addition, she studied as a doctoral student at University of Wisconsin-Madison for two years. Her favorite activities are playing the piano and gardening.

Library Tour - Mexican Legal History Class
Casey Duncan led a tour for Professor Virginia Raymond’s undergraduate Mexican Legal History students. Reference librarians regularly lead tours for the University community and the public, and it is a great way to introduce people to the collection and the resources that the Law Library offers.

Tarlton’s Mardi Gras Celebration - February 5, 2008
The annual celebration of Mardi Gras, courtesy of Tarlton Alumnus Georgia Chadwick's annual King Cake endowment, was a decorative and foodie success. The staff lounge was fabulously decorated by Barbara Bridges and Pierrette Moreno. The king cakes, containing a hidden “baby,” were a hit as usual. This year’s lucky winners were Professor Mersky, Gloria Griggs, Dena Melvin, Marlyn Robinson, and George Pasterk. To spread the Mardi Gras festivity, Melissa Bernstein brought a King Cake in for her legal research class.

Scribes Contest Winner - February 13, 2008
Roy Mersky was the Chair for the Law-Review Award Committee for Scribes-The American Society of Legal Writers. This year the committee selected Katherine A. Ritts’ note on funeral protests as the 2008 winner of the Scribes Law Review competition. Thanks to all the Tarlton staff who were involved in reviewing the articles: Jonathan Pratter, Melissa Bernstein, Casey Duncan, Leslie Ashbrook, and David McClure.

New Senior Administrative Associate - February 14, 2008
As George Peek prepared to leave Tarlton and enter the UT analyst training program, Sofia Chamberlain joined the Tarlton administration. Sofia recently moved from New York City where she completed her master’s degree in humanities and social thought at NYU and worked for NYU School of Law. She is an alumna of UT and was eager to return to the University and the Austin community.

Austin Criminal Defense Lawyers Association Presentation - February 19, 2008
The Austin Criminal Defense Lawyers Association requested a presentation on Tarlton Law Library resources. Melissa Bernstein and Casey Duncan presented information on legal resources, databases, and techniques that local criminal defense attorneys could take advantage of at Tarlton.

Tarlton hosted the Fourth Annual Rare Book Lecture “Blackstone and His Contemporaries” - February 21, 2008
The talk featured Anthony Taussig, a London barrister considered by many to be the world’s leading private collector of rare English law books and manuscripts. In his talk, Taussig questioned traditional views about Sir William Blackstone, the English law professor and jurist who is best known for his Commentaries on the Laws of England.

In honor of the lecture, Tarlton staff prepared an exhibit that celebrated the career and scholarly achievements of Anthony Taussig, and included several prized Blackstone publications from the Tarlton’s rare books collection. The exhibit was displayed in the Law School’s Susman Godfrey Atrium., and it was researched, designed and prepared by Jennifer Cummings and Melanie Cofield.

Tarlton Publishes New Volume in Legal History Series - February 21, 2008
Timed to coincide with the delivery of the fourth annual rare book lecture, the Tarlton Law Library was pleased to announce the publication of the previous year’s rare book lecture, The Literature of Witchcraft Trials: Books & Manuscripts from the Jacob Burns Law Library, by Professor Scott B. Pagel. This title is the most recent addition to the Tarlton Law Library Legal History Series.

George Peek’s Going-Away Party - February 22, 2008
A going-away party in honor of George’s last day at the library was held in the Gwyn Anderson Staff Lounge. After nearly 4 years of dedicated service at Tarlton as Professor Mersky’s executive assistant, George was offered a unique opportunity to join UT’s Department of Information Technology Services’ Information Analyst Training Program.

Tarlton Experiments with Flickr Photo-sharing Site - February 25, 2008
In an effort to streamline the way we share photos among Tarlton staff and the wider legal and academic library communities, electronic publishing specialist Melanie Cofield set up a Flickr site for Tarlton Law Library. So far, the site has been used internally to distribute photos of Tarlton staff parties and events, and to solicit votes on AALL Day in the Life photo contest submissions. Ideas for future use include outreach efforts to engage library patrons, networking with other law libraries, and showcasing the Hyder collection.

ANZSANA (Australian & New Zealand Studies Association of North America) Conference - February 28, 2008
For the ANZSANA conference, which was held in the Doubletree Guest Suites in Austin, Roy Mersky was unable to attend and in his stead Jon Pratter was the chair and discussant for the law and politics panel. The panelists were: Jason Pierce from the University of Dayton discussed The Mason Court’s Legacy in a Post-Howard High Court; Andrew Banfield from the University of Calgary discussed Roach v. Electoral Commissioner: The Composition of a Constitutional Decision; and Lisa White from the Library of Congress discussed Criminal Law and Procedure-Right of Appeal on the Basis of Inadequate Representation, Australia and the U.S. Compared. Tarlton Law Library Launched Patent and Trademark Current Awareness Services - February 28, 2008
The Tarlton Law Library launched two additional current awareness services that are managed by Jane O’Connell, Current Patent Literature and Current Trademark Literature. These services provide basic bibliographic data for recent articles focused on patent and trademark law appearing in U.S. legal journals and non-U.S. legal journals published in English.

March Law School Employee of the Month – Jennifer Cummings
Jennifer Cummings is our archivist librarian stationed in Rare Books and Special Collections. During the absence of a rare book librarian, Jennifer has stepped in and been very supportive to the users of the Rare Book Room, managing our archives, planning exhibits, and collaborating on special projects. It was a well deserved honor.

ABA Book Silver Gavel Award - March 11, 2008
Professor Mersky was a member of the Book Screening Committee for the Gavel Award. Tarlton staff that evaluated the books for the award included: Melissa Bernstein, Jane O’Connell, Casey Duncan, Jon Pratter, Marlyn Robinson, Barbara Bridges, David McClure, and Leslie Ashbrook. The committee agreed with Tarlton’s top choice, Monkey Girl, which was reviewed by Marlyn. The book was sent forward to the Gavel Committee to decide if it is deemed worthy of the Silver Gavel. Special thanks went to Melissa who effectively steered the group evaluation assignments.

David McClure Presentation on Law In Popular Culture Collection/iSchool digital media design course - March, 21, 2008
David McCLure, Tarlton Fellow, presented his final project from his iSchool digital media design class to the Tarlton staff. The project incorporated digital media with elements of the LPOP collection and other Tarlton Law Library materials in a multi-screen interactive display that stimulates new perceptions of the law. The presentation was very well received and plans to implement some aspects of his project are in the works.

April 2008

Tarlton Law Library makes plans for digital repository
As part of a Tarlton strategy to establish a repository for digital scholarly materials from the library and law school, electronic publishing specialist Melanie Cofield joined the UT Institutional Repository Implementation group, meeting weekly to plan and develop UT's DSpace institutional repository, which is scheduled to launch in September 2008.

Library Tour for UT LAMP (Learning Activities for Mature People) Group
Melissa Bernstein gave a tour to 35 visitors that are part of UT LAMP. The group was extremely interested in learning about the library. Jennifer Cummings also provided the group with information about the Rare Books collection at Tarlton.

Prof. Kadens Delivers Lecture Using Rare Book & Special Collections During Alumni Weekend - April 12, 2008
Professor Emily Kadens delivered an impressive lecture on rare Roman law books to a group of approximately 40 people visiting the Law School and the Tarlton over the alumni weekend. Assisting Professor Kadens was archives assistant Jennifer Cummings, who helped gather and prepare a marvelous selection of books from Rare Book & Special Collections, and fielded general questions about the department prior to and following the lecture.

National Library Week - April 13-19, 2008
Tarlton celebrated National Library week with snacks, flowers and a week-long trivia game for law students. Prizes for trivia winners were generously provided by Lexis, Westlaw, and Texas Coffee Traders. The trivia game for the students was a success thanks to the efforts of Melissa Bernstein, reference librarian, and Melanie Cofield, electronic publishing specialist.

Diana Alvarez – Student Worker – Featured in Austin American Statesman - April 17, 2008
Diana Alvarez, a wonderful student worker in the administrative office and a senior in the Department of Human Ecology, Division of Textiles and Apparel, was featured in the Style section of the Austin American Statesman. For her senior project, Diana created 3 dress designs that were also featured in the UT Celebrate! Senior Fashion Show 2008 at the Erwin Center. She was awarded first place for “Best Evening Wear.” The dresses are a testament to her dedication and talent.

The photo entitled, “The Colorful Side of Legal Research: Searching Superseded Sources,” was entered in the category Librarians as Expert Researchers. The photo was taken by electronic publishing specialist Melanie Cofield and submitted by reference librarian Melissa Bernstein. The photo depicts Tarlton law librarians Melissa Bernstein, Jane O’Connell, and Casey Duncan looking through superseded sources in the closed stacks to find something for a patron.

Leslie Ashbrook
Leslie, the senior Tarlton Fellow, completed her Master’s in Information Science through UT’s graduate School of Information this May. She will be leaving Tarlton and is currently interviewing for Librarian positions throughout the country.

University Staff Recognition
Three Tarlton staff members were recognized at the annual Staff Recognition Program and President’s Reception May 1. Each of them was acknowledged at the President’s Reception and at the Dean’s Staff Service Award Reception, held at the Law School on May 7, was presented a framed certificate of appreciation.

  • Leticia Garcia is the acquisitions assistant for Tarlton and has served the University for 25 years.
  • John Murray is a cataloger for Tarlton and has served the University for 15 years.
  • Brian Quigley is Tarlton’s associate director for administration and collection services and has been with the University for 25 years.

Digitization of Dorothy Most Scrapbook - May 19-23, 2008
Coordinating with UT Libraries staff, electronic publishing specialist Melanie Cofield and archives assistant Jennifer Cummings digitized the scrapbook of Dorothy Most, the only woman in the UT Senior Law Class of 1925. The scrapbook contains a wealth of memorabilia, photographs, correspondence, greeting cards, ephemera, anecdotes, and annotations documenting the students, faculty, events, and activities at The University of Texas and its law school during the years that Dorothy Most was enrolled and for a few years afterward. Interestingly, this unique item fortuitously found its way into the Tarlton’s special collections by way of a California trash bin. Our plan is to incorporate the digital images into an upcoming online exhibit – stay tuned!

June 2008

New Rare Book Librarian
Elizabeth Haluska-Rausch joined the staff as the new rare book librarian for Tarlton’s special collections. She comes to Tarlton from the Bridwell Library at SMU’s Perkins School of Theology. Elizabeth has a Ph.D. in medieval history from Harvard, a graduate degree in information science for University of North Texas, and her undergraduate degree from SMU.

Jeanne Price
Jeanne has been been a wonderful presence at Tarlton for the past 7 years. It means a great loss to Tarlton that Jeanne Price will assume the directorship of the Law Library at the University of Nevada Las Vegas in July. Jeanne will be the Director of the Law Library and an Associate Professor of Law.

Trends in Law Library Management and Technology is a publication that provides practical, timely articles of interest to the law library profession. Trends solicited an article from Professor Mersky regarding Tarlton’s Rare Books & Special Collections. New rare book librarian Elizabeth Haluska-Rausch and archives assistant Jennifer Cummings wrote and submitted the article about the collections and it will be published in the June issue of Trends.
